=====================
The Balkan Peninsula serves as a captivating intersection of diverse civilizations, where Thracians, Greeks, Slavs, Turks, and Proto-Bulgarians have shaped what we recognize as Bulgarian culture. Deep-rooted traditions and customs from ancient times endure in these lands, expressed through song, dance, and timeless motifs—passed down even when their origins are elusive. Unconsciously, we carry the echoes of bygone eras within our modern lives.
This rich cultural tapestry finds embodiment in the creations of DankoHandmade. The vibrant hues inspired by Bulgarian national costumes, the enduring shapes, and intricate ornaments reflect a fusion of influences.
For two decades, our workshop has endeavored to perpetuate this legacy by interpreting it through a contemporary lens.
The Process:
(Explore our shop for other stages of ceramics making)
Bisque Firing:
Upon drying to greenware, a clay piece undergoes the first of two firings, reaching temperatures of around 1800 degrees F (980 degrees C). This process fortifies the ware, rendering it more manageable for subsequent glazing without the risk of breakage. The porous nature of clay at this stage allows it to absorb liquids. During bisque firing, water in the glaze is absorbed by the porous bisque ware, leaving glassy materials on the surface. This prepares the piece for the glazing process, ensuring a smoother application. The kiln's warming process is meticulously controlled to prevent any mishaps, progressing gradually to the desired temperature. Afterward, the kiln is carefully cooled, and the bisque ware, now ready for glazing, is unveiled as the kiln opens.
